Repair symptoms

What changed is usually more useful than a guessed part.

Electrical symptoms can share more than one possible cause. The useful starting point is the pattern: what stopped, which rooms or devices are affected, when it happens, what else was operating, and whether there is heat, odor, sound, water, visible damage, or recent work.

Breakers

A breaker trips once, repeatedly, or as equipment starts

Why does a breaker keep tripping?

A breaker can open because of an overloaded circuit, a short circuit, a ground fault, a damaged device or conductor, loose or overheated equipment, an equipment fault, or another condition. The trip does not prove that the breaker itself is bad. Do not keep resetting it, increase the breaker size, or bypass protection. Record what was running and whether the trip was immediate or delayed, then request diagnosis.

Why is an outlet dead even though the breaker looks on?

The cause can be an upstream GFCI, a tripped protective device, a loose or failed connection, a damaged receptacle, a switch-controlled outlet, a circuit fault, or loss of power elsewhere on the branch circuit. Who should I call when only part of the property has power?

First check whether neighbors or the street are also affected and report a wider outage to the utility.
