Ring and video doorbell installation in Essex, Morris and Union County, NJ
Ring's Wired Doorbell Pro and Google's wired Nest doorbells need a transformer rated 16 to 24 volts AC and at least 10 VA (Ring, Google). Installs average $300 nationally (Angi). Call MDL in West Orange to ask about yours.
The short answer
A video doorbell job is a power job, and the transformer decides it.
Swap onto the old wires. The doorbell wires and a working chime are already there. Ring's steps: power off at the breaker, fit the chime kit or jumper, connect the two wires, then restore power and ring it (Ring; Amazon).
Wires there, power too weak. Some video doorbells want more power than an old bell. Google says its wired Nest doorbells have higher power requirements than most doorbells, and some homes need a new transformer (Google; transformer below).
No doorbell wires at all. A battery model, a plug-in adapter at an indoor outlet, or a new low-voltage wire run from a transformer to a chime and the button (options below).
Published installs average $300 (Angi). MDL Electric holds a New Jersey electrical contractor license (34EI01606200) and works from 4 Harrison Avenue in West Orange across Essex, Morris and Union County. Call 973.809.2339 to ask whether MDL handles the wiring for the Ring, Nest or other video doorbell you bought.
Power
Match the transformer to the doorbell.
Each maker lists the transformer range its doorbells accept. These are their own numbers, read October 29, 2026. Use only a transformer inside the range for your model.

| Doorbell | Volts (AC) | Power | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ring battery doorbells, wired for power | 8 to 24 V | 5 to 40 VA | Ring |
| Ring Video Doorbell Wired | 10 to 24 V | 8 to 40 VA | Ring |
| Ring Wired Doorbell Plus, Wired Doorbell Pro, Wired Doorbell 2K Plus | 16 to 24 V | 10 to 40 VA | Ring |
| Ring Wired Doorbell 4K Pro | 16 to 24 V | 10 to 40 VA | Ring |
| Nest Doorbell (battery), wired for power | 8 to 24 V | 10 to 40 VA | |
| Nest Doorbell (wired) | 16 to 24 V (North America) | 10 to 40 VA (North America) | |
| Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen and 3rd gen) | 16 to 24 V (North America) | 10 to 40 VA |
- Read the label. Google says transformers are typically labeled with a voltage rating, usually molded or etched into the body.Google
- Find where it hides. Google lists inside the chime box, near the breaker or fuse box, the basement or crawl space, the garage and the attic. You can often follow the wires from the chime.Google; Google
- No label, no match. Google says a doorbell system is not compatible if the transformer has no label, or if its voltage is above or below the range.Google
- A blinking yellow light. If a wired Nest doorbell blinks a yellow light on the front after install, Google says it is not getting enough power.Google
- The maker's own warning. Ring says installation by a qualified electrician might be required in your area, and that permits plus professional installation might be required by law.Ring
Doorbell transformer replacement
When the old transformer has to go.
Google's advice for its wired Nest doorbells is plain: the best way to make sure a transformer is installed correctly is to have a licensed electrician install it.
- Video doorbells want more power. Google says Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen) and (wired, 3rd gen) have higher power requirements than most doorbells. Some installations need a new transformer rated 16 to 24 V AC, 10 to 40 VA.Google
- Our houses are old. About 52% of Essex County's 339,451 housing units were built before 1960, 56% of Union County's 214,673 and 32% of Morris County's 201,564. Where the doorbell system is original, it is decades older than any video doorbell.US Census ACS 2024, B25034
- What it costs. Angi puts a new doorbell transformer at about $20 to $35, plus $150 to $250 for an electrician to install it. A national market range, not an MDL price.Angi
- Where the work happens. Google says the transformer can be near the main electrical panel, inside the chime box, in the garage or in the attic. That is where the job starts, not at the front door.Google
- Or skip the wires. If you would rather not replace the transformer, Google suggests a battery-powered Nest doorbell instead.Google
Google says the transformer is often near the main electrical panel. If that panel is full or failing, see panel upgrades. Cloth-covered or ungrounded wiring behind it: see knob and tube wiring replacement.
Doorbell chime not working
Why the chime stops ringing, or never starts.
A video doorbell has to share its power with the chime inside. The makers' own guides explain most of the trouble.
- Front and Trans. Inside the chime are Front and Trans terminals. For the Wired Doorbell 4K Pro, Ring says to fit the included Chime Kit Mini. The other choice is to bypass the chime by joining the Front and Trans wires with a wire nut.Ring
- A power kit or a jumper. Amazon's guide says that, depending on the Ring model, either a Chime Power Kit or the included jumper cable goes between the Front and Trans terminals.Amazon
- Not every model rings the old chime. Ring says its Wired Doorbell 4K Pro and Wired Doorbell 2K Plus do not work with existing chimes unless the 4K Pro runs on Power over Ethernet. A Chime Kit Mini makes the sound inside instead.Ring
- A second chime. If the house has more than one chime, Ring says the additional chimes must be bypassed for the Wired Doorbell 4K Pro.Ring
- Digital chimes. Ring's table says Video Doorbell (1st Gen) and Video Doorbell 2 need a diode with a digital chime; its newer models do not.Ring
- Battery chimes and intercoms. Google says chimes that run only on batteries do not work with Nest doorbells. Intercom and gate systems typically do not either. Wires not labeled T, F or R call for a professional.Google
- What a repair costs. Angi puts doorbell repair labor at about $150 to $275. A national market range, not an MDL price.Angi
No doorbell yet
New doorbell wire, power at the button, and the outlet.
A house with no doorbell wires has three ways to power a video doorbell. Two of them are electrical work.
- Power has to reach the button. Ring says a hardwired doorbell must be mounted at a proper electrical wiring source, and that a plug-in model must be installed near a power outlet.Ring
- A new wire run. Google says that if there are no wires and you want the doorbell to ring a chime, a professional has to install wires for a new doorbell system. Angi puts an electrician running new wiring at $162 to $535.Google; Angi
- Mount it at 48 inches. Ring says 48 inches (1.22 meters) from the ground gives the best motion detection. Wedge and corner kits adjust the angle for steps, siding or a door on a corner.Ring
- A plug-in adapter. Ring sells a Plug-In Adapter (24 V DC, 500 mA), and Google an indoor power adapter for Nest Doorbell (wired). Both plug into a standard wall outlet inside.Ring; Google
- A new outlet for it. If there is no outlet near the door, a new one is wiring work. In New Jersey, five or fewer new outlets in a one- or two-family home count as minor work, with notice to the town before work starts.N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.17A
The electrical side
How a wired video doorbell goes in.
From Ring's own install guide for its Wired Doorbell 4K Pro. Amazon's guide for other wired Ring models follows a similar order.
Power off
Shut off power at the breaker. Ring says that if you are unsure which breaker, turn off the master breaker or contact an electrician.
The chime
Remove the chime cover, then fit the chime kit or jumper across Front and Trans, or bypass the chime.
The button
Mount the bracket over the doorbell wires and connect them to the doorbell's terminals.
Power on and test
Restore power at the breaker, then ring the doorbell to make sure everything is connected.
After that the doorbell joins your existing Wi-Fi in the maker's app. Ring says to test the signal where the doorbell mounts; a weak signal is a network question, not a wiring one. New Jersey rules
When doorbell work needs a permit in New Jersey.
From the state Uniform Construction Code, N.J.A.C. 5:23-2, NJ Department of Community Affairs (published through August 17, 2026), read October 29, 2026. Your town's construction office enforces it and decides edge cases.

| Job | What the code says | Section |
|---|---|---|
| Install a doorbell in a one- or two-family home | Ordinary electrical maintenance includes "the installation of a burglar alarm, security system, or doorbell in one- and two-family dwellings". Ordinary maintenance needs no permit and no notice to the construction official. | 5:23-2.7(a), (c)3.vi |
| Repair a doorbell | Ordinary electrical maintenance also includes "repairs to any installed electrically operated equipment such as doorbells". | 5:23-2.7(c)3.ii |
| Add an outlet for a plug-in adapter | Minor work includes installing five or fewer outlets in a one- or two-family home where the existing circuits can carry the load. The town is told before work starts, and the permit application follows within five business days. | 5:23-2.17A |
| Other new wiring | Installing or altering equipment the code regulates needs a permit before the work, unless a rule above covers it. | 5:23-2.14(a) |
| Who may do the wiring | Electrical work only by persons licensed to do it, except a single-family homeowner on his or her own home. | 5:23-2.15 |
A doorbell as a gift
Got a video doorbell for the holidays? Check its power first.
If one is a gift this season, five checks before the box is opened and the old bell comes off the wall.
- Find the exact model. The power range differs by model, so read it on the box or in the manual, then find it in the table above.Ring; Google
- Battery models skip the wiring. Google says Nest Doorbell (battery) can run on battery power alone. Amazon's guide mounts Ring battery models with screws, no wires.Google; Amazon
- Read the transformer. If its label is missing or outside the range, plan on a new transformer before the doorbell goes up.Google
- Check the chime. A battery-only chime will not work with a Nest doorbell, and some Ring models need a Chime Kit Mini.Google; Ring
- Check the Wi-Fi at the door. Ring says to test the signal where the doorbell will mount before you install it.Ring

How much does it cost to install a Ring doorbell?
About $300 on average. Angi puts doorbell camera installation at $50 to $600, with an average of $300 and up to $1,100 for complex wired setups (updated July 9, 2026). If the transformer has to be replaced, Angi adds $150 to $250 in labor. These are national market ranges, not MDL prices.
Do I need an electrician to install my Ring doorbell?
For a battery model on a bracket, usually not. For a hardwired one, often yes. Ring says installation by a qualified electrician might be required in your area, and that permits plus professional installation might be required by law. Google says a licensed electrician is best prepared to find and replace a doorbell transformer. In New Jersey, electrical work may only be done by persons licensed to do it, except a single-family homeowner on his or her own home (N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.15).
What wires go where on a Ring doorbell?
Two thin doorbell wires come out of the wall at the button. They go to the two terminals on the back of the doorbell; Ring's Wired Doorbell 4K Pro uses fork connectors on them. Inside, the chime has Front and Trans terminals. Depending on the model, a power kit or a jumper goes across those two terminals, or the chime is bypassed. Ring and Amazon both say to turn the power off at the breaker first.
What transformer do I need for a Ring doorbell?
It depends on the model. Ring lists 8 to 24 volts AC and 5 to 40 VA for its battery doorbells, 10 to 24 VAC and 8 to 40 VA for Video Doorbell Wired, and 16 to 24 VAC and 10 to 40 VA for Wired Doorbell Plus, Wired Doorbell Pro, Wired Doorbell 2K Plus and Wired Doorbell 4K Pro. Ring says to use only an existing transformer within the range for your model.
What transformer does a Nest doorbell need?
Google says Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen) and Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen) need a transformer rated 16 to 24 V AC and 10 to 40 VA. Nest Doorbell (battery) accepts 8 to 24 V AC. If a wired Nest doorbell blinks a yellow light on the front, Google says it is not getting enough power.
How much does it cost to replace a doorbell transformer?
Angi says a new doorbell transformer costs about $20 to $35, and recommends an electrician to install it for an additional $150 to $250 (updated October 21, 2026). These are national market ranges, not MDL prices.
Where is my doorbell transformer?
Google lists the usual places: inside the doorbell chime box, near the breaker or fuse box, in the basement or crawl space, in the garage or in the attic. You can often follow the wires from the chime. The voltage rating is usually molded or etched into the transformer's body.
Why is my doorbell chime not working after installing a video doorbell?
The makers' guides point to three common causes: a chime kit or power kit the model needs was not fitted, the chime is digital or runs only on batteries, or the house has a second chime. Ring says its Wired Doorbell 4K Pro and Wired Doorbell 2K Plus do not work with existing chimes unless the 4K Pro runs on Power over Ethernet; they use a Chime Kit Mini instead. Google says chimes that run only on batteries do not work with Nest doorbells.
Can I install a video doorbell if I don't have a doorbell?
Yes, in three ways. A battery model runs without wires. A plug-in adapter powers it from an indoor outlet: Ring sells a 24-volt DC plug-in adapter, and Google an indoor power adapter for Nest Doorbell (wired). Or an electrician runs new doorbell wire from a transformer to a chime and the button. Google says that if you want the doorbell to ring a chime and there are no wires, a professional has to install wires for a new doorbell system.
Do I need a permit to install a video doorbell in New Jersey?
Usually not for the doorbell itself. N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.7(c)3.vi lists the installation of a doorbell in one- and two-family homes as ordinary electrical maintenance, which needs no permit and no notice to the town. A new outlet is different: installing five or fewer outlets in a one- or two-family home is minor work, so the town is told before work starts and the permit application follows within five business days (N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.17A). Your town's construction office decides edge cases.
How high should a video doorbell be mounted?
Ring says 48 inches (1.22 meters) from the ground for the best motion detection, and that a hardwired doorbell has to be mounted at a proper electrical wiring source. If the door sits on a corner, behind angled siding or above steps, Ring's wedge or corner kits change the camera's angle.
What happens after the doorbell is wired?
Power goes back on at the breaker and the doorbell is rung to check that everything is connected, which is the last step in Ring's own install guide. The doorbell then joins your existing Wi-Fi through the maker's app. Ring says to test the Wi-Fi signal where the doorbell mounts. A weak signal there is a network question, not a wiring one.
Is a video doorbell a good gift if the house has old doorbell wiring?
It can be, if you check the power first. Read the model on the box, then compare the transformer's label with the maker's range. Google says a doorbell system whose transformer has no label is not compatible with Nest doorbells. A battery model avoids the question, and a wired model may need a new transformer or chime kit.
How do I ask MDL about a video doorbell?
Call 973.809.2339 or send the form on this page with your town, the doorbell's brand and model, whether there is a doorbell and chime now, and where the transformer is if you know. MDL will tell you whether it handles that job. MDL Electric is a licensed New Jersey electrical contractor at 4 Harrison Avenue in West Orange.
