The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says a new residential split system installed after January 1, 2026 must use a refrigerant with a global warming potential below 700. For this rule, replacing both the outdoor condensing unit and indoor coil together counts as a new system—even when the existing refrigerant lines remain.

That does not mean every working R-410A system became illegal or must be replaced. EPA also says an existing system can be maintained and repaired through its useful life, including replacement of a faulty component with a similar R-410A component. The repair-versus-replacement question still depends on the actual failure, available components, efficiency, system condition, and total cost of each path.
